Samnites

Defended with an ocrea- either made of metal or leather- on the left leg and a protective gauntlet on the right arm, these vicious fighters go into the arena to...well, to FIGHT TO THE BLOODY END (or until told otherwise, just like all other gladiators).
Armed with a shield, helmet, sword, and sometimes a lance, these brutes are some of the best of the best in our ranks.
Mostly pitted against net-men, these stocky giants take protection over agility in combat! ...like they have a choice. Their swords, made not to slash the opponent, but are used, rather, to thrust and hack with.

RETIARIUS

Considered some of our more "effeminate" men, they are put into the with a loin cloth (held up by a belt) , shoulder guard, and an arm guard on their left arm. Even though they are the most lightly armored, they have agility on their side and can be very nimble on their feet. Unfortunately, they are considered of an even lowering rank than the other gladiators, but who cares? He's just a gladiator after all. Pffft.
They go into battle with a triple pronged trident, a weighed-down net, and some type of short sword.
They aim the net to disarm their opponent, or to have their opponent be trapped underneath, just long enough for them to attack. They use the short sword as a last result.

Like the retiarius, he wore a loin cloth that was kept up by a belt, except he has a linen manica to protects his right arm , and a leg grieve on his left leg.
He is armed with a long, straight sword, a helmet with a fish for the crest and a long, rectangle-like shield.
The manica is mainly for protecting the right arm against blows intended for the shield.
In the keeping with the times, he fights retiarius and secutors.

These curios fighters have pant-like garments protecting their legs, usually held up by belt, a metal greave on the left leg, and a round or possibly square shield (we let them decide which type they like best).
They are armed with a sword about two feet long that grows wider as it reaches it's base, and sometimes they had daggers though they almost always almost always have lances. Lances were used to thrust with and not to throw (believe us, it took a long time to teach the m that rule), and are around six feet tall.
They are heavily armored, and just like the samnites, trade agility for protection. because of this, they are paired up with other heavily-armed fighters.

We are ashamed to say that we do have these types of "gladiators." Some of the most awful criminals are used for this, are put in the arena to fight to the death, but our motto for them are: "Oh, you're the last one standing? Too bad." However, these are great for comic relief. And they do funerals too!
They had no arm armor, except for an impermeable helmet, a sword, and loin cloth (who else was happy to read that?). They fought only other hardened criminals like themselves. And yes, we do use the "smash your head if we're not sure your alive" policy, even in training.
