A Brief History
It is said to have started when the father of Junius Brutus died. To honor his death, his had gladiators fight against each other during the funereal which was done so that he could travel safely to the next world. Since it was done in a public place and it was the funeral of a famous person, the fight attracted a large crowd. It gained popularity, and eventually many more prestigious people were copying the idea. Eventually, prestigious families were trying to top each other in the gladiator games and these events slowly transformed to public events that were sponsored by politicians in order to get the public's favor.
As the popularity of gladiator games increased, so did the gambling that came along with it. It still is, and everyone knows that you can get quite a nice sum of money if you bet on the correct gladiators. This is a reason our school exists. We train gladiators that will win, that allow you to win big sums of money if you bet on them, but in order to get something, you must give.
Now despite the peril that being a gladiator brings, some people do volunteer (though most are POWs and criminals.) Some become gladiators for the fame, wanting to be the girl' heartthrob. Some, because they are broke and need to be taken care of, willing to become temporary slaves and giving up their freedom for it. They all know that a horrible (and often short) life follows them but they accept nonetheless.
Not only did gladiator games become important with religion, it also integrated itself in politics. Some campaigns were good run through mostly gladiator games. Politicians, after winning the favor of the mass by putting up a nice bloodbath, had a much better chance to make it big in the government than other politicians who did not.
